Digital Sculpting Update

Here's a few in-progress shots of stuff from my ZBrush class. Need to refine the textures in the guy and finish sculpting the creature (fur!). Fun stuff, it's like drawing in 3D.

Sketchbook-keeping

Taking a storyboarding class with Pamela Mathues. Really fun, she's so energetic and enthusiastic about the art of story telling it's hard not to get caught up in it. The class is on Wednesday so it's the perfect "pick-me up" in the middle of the week. Here are some sketchbook assignments, one from people in an environment and another from a life drawing session held at the school. Drawing people when they aren't staying still for you combined with trying to not look like a stalker, make the environmental drawings more of a challenge. But it's easier to impart a story or evoke a feeling with them.

Monday Madness!

Not really madness...But here's some current things from my concept art resources class. The whole class has to work with a rough story our teacher Eddie Smith gave us: Earth is uninhabitable so what's left of the human race is traveling to Mars on the ship known as the Arc of Solaris. Unfortunately the humans stole technology from an aggressive alien race who is none too happy with that, but humankind is aided with "protector" aliens who share a genetic similarity to us.

Here's some concept pieces of characters from each race plus some silhouettes.
Humans:

Initially I had the protector's more "wispy" and ethereal as they were supposed to be noble. But I decided to go a different route in terms of their design and leaned more towards "intelligent gorilla." We have dubbed them Spatual Kings.

And lastly the aggressors. They're pugnacious bugs, not too much to say.

Eventually, I'll have to refine the turn-arounds even more...such as actually rendering the back view.

Summer Fun

Phew, almost caught up with present work. These were done over the summer for a layouts/background class. A lot of fun. Learned different workflows and gained insight into perspective from Peter Moehrle.

Retrospective Part II

Character made for my second CG class. Heavily inspired after reading the first Dune and starting on Dune Messiah. All the textures had a diffuse, specular, and normal (generated by Crazy Bump). Model was roughly 5,000 polygons (quads and a few tri's) modeled in 3ds Max. It was fully rigged and animated quickly.
Sculpture with water clay. Half a semester. The model was great, her pose had such attitude to it and she kept it up for a while. Really relaxing class.

Retrospective Part 1

So to kick start the blog I'm posting some older stuff. Pretty much all school related. Obviously this is just a few things from the previous year (not even touching animation stuffs). A mix of traditional (oils) and digital (photoshop and 3ds Max). In the bottom right corner is the first finished piece of 3d work. It's unbelievable how long that thing took and how easy it would be to go back and redo it now.

New Blog!

Hello citizens of the internet. I will be posting art momentarily.
